This picture was inspired by a series of science-fiction landscapes I've been working on. The others in the series are done in colored-pencil, but I haven't yet had a chance to scan them in. The creature at the top-right was inspired by a Norse carving I had seen in the British museum -- the Norse carving was a bit more serpentine, like a sea-monster. I wanted to evoke a mysterious creature that is both silent and reflective, in contrast to a landscape of perilous heights and unstable activity, such as the volcano at left.
